چکیده
The work reported in this paper was carried out under an ESA contract (15600/01/I-LG) with the purpose of demonstrating the potential of polarimetric SAR compared with single-polarization data for some key application areas to support the decisions on future satellite SAR systems. Three key application areas were identified (a) SAR polarimetry for agriculture classification, (b) SAR polarimetry for sea ice monitoring, and (c) Polarimetric SAR Interferometry for retrieval of vegetation parameters. These application areas were selected both because they have shown large improvements using SAR polarimetry, and because they cover important areas for the use of remotely sensed data. In this paper, the results of the study are briefly outlined.

Compact Polarimetry at the Moon: The Mini-RF Radars
The Mini-RF radar aboard India’s lunar Chandrayaan-1 satellite [1] (2008-9) was the first polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) outside of Earth orbit. The architecture of that radar—and of its more advanced two-frequency sibling on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter [2] (2009)—is hybrid dual-polarimetric [3][4]. This architecture is a form of compact polarimetry [5] in which the dual-re...
متن کاملSpecial Issue on Polarimetric SAR Techniques and Applications
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) polarimetry is an active and fruitful field of research in Earth observation. Polarimetry provides sensitivity to the soil moisture, as well as to the structural and geometric properties of the targets under observation, allowing a more accurate identification and classification than with non-polarimetric data. Moreover, the increasing number of spaceborne SAR sys...

GB-SAR (Ground Based Synthetic Aperture Radar) for inspection of wooden and concrete walls and structures has been developed and the system was evaluated by test measurements. The GB-SAR system uses frequency bandwidth 1-10GHz, and it can acquire full polarimetric radar signal. Then Synthetic Aperture (SAR) Radar signal processing is used to reconstruct 3-dimenatioal images of inner structure o...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional and full polarimetric imaging by a synthetic aperture FM-CW radar
This paper applies the principle of radar polarimetry to a synthetic aperture frequency-modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar and presents results based on two-dimensional (2-D) full polarimetric imaging. It is shown that the polarimetric target reflection coefficients obtained by the synthetic aperture FM-CW radar are elements of a Sinclair scattering matrix, although the coefficients are de...

Radar Polarimetry and Polarimetric SAR Interferometry represent the current culmination in ‘Microwave Remote Sensing’ technology based on the Antennas, Propagation, Radar and Systems. The purpose and procedure of polarimetry and polarimetric interferometry are shown in Fig. 1. With polarimetric radar sensing, it is possible to carry out 1) detection of targets, 2) decomposition of scattering me...
متن کاملSpeckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Using Laplace Distribution
Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the...
